Leadership to manage lasting change

Leadership and Management are often difficult to separate, since they are often treated as the same characteristic to describe an individual’s behaviour, but they are discreetly different.

Management is the knowledge, skills and behaviours associated with managing complex situations
Leadership is the knowledge, skills and behaviours associated with managing change

The key to the confusion is the common use of the word ‘managing’, which basically translates into three things that both leaders and managers must do:

  • Both need to decide what needs to be done (planning and budgeting for managers, setting direction and vision for leaders)
  • Both need to create a network of people, plant, equipment, processes and philosophies to get the job done (organising people for managers, making sure the right attitude and skills are in place for leaders)
  • Both need to ensure that things get done (controlling and monitors resources for managers, motivating and inspiring leaders)
